Dr. Arieh Y. Shalev is a distinguished expert in the field of traumatic stress disorder, with a career spanning over 30 years. His research has focused on understanding the early responses to traumatic events, predicting their outcomes, and developing early preventive interventions. He has also explored the heterogeneities in mental and biological responses to trauma using advanced bioinformatics tools.

Dr. Shalev has published over 170 peer-reviewed articles and holds an H-index of 68, reflecting the significant impact of his work in the field of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). His research has been instrumental in describing, understanding, and preventing PTSD, with a special emphasis on the disorder's early development. His pioneering studies have covered various aspects of evolving PTSD, including descriptive psychopathology, comorbid conditions, psychophysiology, neuroendocrinology, structural brain imaging, and gene expression. In addition to his research, Dr. Shalev has mentored numerous professionals at various stages of their academic careers, contributing to the growth and development of the field. His recent work involves using advanced statistical modeling and bioinformatics to better understand the psychological, social, and biological factors contributing to chronic PTSD and to uncover individual variations and heterogeneities in these responses. Dr. Shalev has received several prestigious awards for his contributions to the field, including the 1988 Meritorious Service Award from the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences, the 1995 Robert S. Laufer Memorial Award for Outstanding Scientific Achievement in the Field of PTSD from the International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies, and the 2007 Lifetime Achievement Award from the International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies. In 2024, he received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Israel Association of Psychiatry. Amid the recent war in Israel, Dr. Shalev has initiated new explorations into conceptual and computational approaches to infer PTSD risk from data obtained shortly after trauma exposure and to optimize treatment approaches for trauma-exposed survivors.
